The 'powers that be' are looking into the issue of MOT exemptions.

www.dft.gov.uk/consultations/closed/mot ... exemptions

I think that most vehicle owners would probably want to know that their vehicle was safe, but at the present, an MOT is optional for some vehicles that carry a Fair Organ.

Any views? :worried2:

Hi Dave.
The powers that be have been wanting to remove the MOT exemption on certain classes of vehicles for a few years.
At one time a vehicle could be exempt from the MOT test if it was an exhibition unit with a permanent display or an Organ installed in the vehicle or a type of fairground vehicle with certain restrictions such as restricted speed, but this was ammended a few years ago.
When I owned the 'Princess' Organ it was exempt until the law was changed.
I remember 'Chris Chandler' who owned 'Whistling Dixie' which was installed in an adapted ex US military Lorry, he had to take it off the road because it did'nt comply with the type approval criteria and he had great difficulty in obtaining an MOT certificate infact I am not sure if he did eventually get one.
It may be interesting to see what action the 'Showmans Guild' are taking
because it will affect them badly if all classes have to be MOTd
Whils't I agree that a vehicle must be roadworthy, many of the older Organ and Fairground vehicles would not meet the present day standard required and allowances could be made.

Regards
George :grinder:

Hi George.

At the last FOPS Committee meeting, Jack Schofield pointed out that all the modern MOT stations are not even equipped to deal with the older vehicles.

So they would have to put all MOT staff on a training course to acquire the necessary knowledge to deal with vintage transport!
